Red Hat History
Red Hat Enterprise Linux, also known as RHEL, is a Linux distribution developed for the commercial market, including mainframes. The first version of RHEL bearing the Red Hat name was originally marketed as "Red Hat Linux Advanced Server," but in 2003 the product was rebranded to Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS, or RHEL AS. At that time two additional variants were added, Red Hat Enterprise Linux Edge Server (RHEL ES) and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation (RHEL WS).
Currently Red Hat supports each version it releases for 7 years and releases new versions every 18 to 24 months. Red Hat customers are able to upgrade to the newest version for free as long as they have a current subscription.
